From 1950, the people of India experienced a fresh start. All of them were now "citizens with guaranteed fundamental rights", for the first time in a long civilisational history spanning thousands of years. The many fractures and incongruities of the society were to be met head-on with a progressive new Constitution, reflective of a forward motion, not retrograde one.
